Steve
Bush - What Lovers Say FOD 028
With a wry smile etched firmly on face, What Lovers
Say brings vulgarity to the surface in truly splendid
fashion.
Coming on like Bristol's answer to Beck, with more than
a devil's haircut in his repertoire, Sugarshack's enigmatic
lone star, Steve Bush has crafted a song that is reminiscent
of those awkward moments that you would rather not have
the pleasure of remembering, let alone witnessing.
With its semi-industrial beats and funk-fuelled rhythms,
What Lovers Say is a truly perplexing hybrid of Daft
Punk's Da Funk spliced with the diversity of Beck's
Odelay, and delivered with the aplomb of Bill Pritchard's
Jolie. This, of course, wouldn't be feasible without
Mr Bush being able to wrap his sharp tongue around this
compelling choon with a wicked seal of approval.
On the other side, and left alone to his own devices,
Steve Bush has shaken and stirred his own cocktail to
provide value for money with a completely different
take of the original song. The kitsch delivery of weird
beats and keyboard doodling, complete with its facetious
address to the original song title, is memorable for
all the wrong reasons.
The finished article sounds like a collaboration between
Damon Albarn and Jarvis Cocker after a night spent on
the tiles.
The brooding, Colours Don't Mean Love with its spinal
support of jagged guitar barely keeping the fragility
of the song together as it threatens to collapse under
its own weight, provides an indication of the direction
Steve Bush is likely to move in after the jazz-influenced
moments, and splashes of pop, found throughout his debut
album.
In the meantime, What Lovers Say is a delicious reminder
of a gifted talent at the heart of a currently diverse
music scene. One question remains though, how much longer
can this Blossom Freak remain a closely guarded secret?

Steve
Bush - Blossom Freak FOD 024
'Nice tunes, weird words, big beats,' aptly describe
this eclectic set of songs from Bristol's Steve Bush.
Blossom Freak is the kind of album that places a comforting
arm around your shoulder one minute only to leave you
floundering the next.
Once you've succumbed to the various (wicked) delights
on offer here - the twisted, dark tales of vile mouth's,
split-personalities, and lascivious desires - you won't
be able to leave this album alone.
A truly weird cocktail of Daft Punk; Bill Pritchard;
fragments of Beck skipping through the backdoor; and
a dash of Gerard Langley's poetic tongue make Blossom
Freak more than a compelling experience.
