Quote...
From Simon Edwards 'El Presidente of Heartbeat Records':
'At a time when the local music scene was very much influenced by Punk/New Wave and other elements were moving toward a more jagged experimental approach, it struck me as reassuring when along came The Europeans. They had a more traditional rock based sound, though at the same time still maintaining that modern edge with the inclusion of the synthesiser which was very unusual at the time.
I was very impressed with the standard of musicianship and the firm evidence that the 'balls control' lever was definitely locked in the 'ON' position. The songs were great and I was lucky enough to commit three tracks to vinyl - hear them now and they still sound great - always the sign of a great band. I guess the one thing that always stood out though, was, well lets just say I wish they'd been called 'The Noses'!'
Post Europeans...
Steve Street went on to become an engineer and record producer, eventually working for
'Tears for Fears'.
Jonathan Cole secured a solo deal with Rialto Records.
As for Jon Klein... 'The Specimen' was born in early 1981 in Bristol when Jon, Ollie and Kev from the
X-Certs collided. They played their first gig at a party in a house in Redland on the same day as the Royal wedding - the date 29/7/81.
The Specimen headed for London to create 'The Bat Cave' and became forerunners in the British 'Goth scene'. Jon later became the guitarist in
'Siouxsie and the Banshees', recording and touring to promote their last three albums 'Peepshow', 'Superstition' and 'The Rapture'.
