Keiko Reviews

Keiko @ Espionage The Thekla, Bristol (Sat 3 Nov)
Putting on an electic mix of bands prior to unleashing a bag full of retro classics to a sea of gurning throwbacks has paid off handsomely for Fat Paul and cohaorts in chaos. Recent nights have seen The Heads and Static Sound System tear up the floor before the likes of DJ'S John The Mod and Hugo whip the congregation into a frenzy. Tonight, with lone pianist Keiko barely noticeable on the tiny stage crammed with DJ paraphernalia, it seemed the audacious promoters had finally faltered. But, despite a general indifference from a rapidly filling Thelka, he managed to plough through a gently persuasive set of melancholic tales in defiantly upbeat fashion.

With warm vocals and bouncing keys, this Badly Drawn Bloke gradually won admirers with a slight but affecting set that proved a pleasing contrast to the oncoming aural assault. With his self-titled album-a chockful of gems such as tonight's highlights, 'Jealous Eyes' and 'Sleeping There'-now available. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more from the enigmatic Mr Keiko.
