BITESWEET-EMO DISPLAYS DARKER UNDERBELLY LIVE
LEFT SIDE BRAIN’s metal-tinged, post-punk lacks enough tunes to rule the world, but solid riffs and vocals suggest them worth keeping an eye on. Dopamine, meanwhile, have no shortage of killer tracks. One-time-home to bassist Gareth Davies before he joined F4AF, Dopamine is South Wales’ grunge-tinged answer to Finch, and gems like ‘Beauty Queens and Bloodbaths’ and the fierce scream and stage-presence of Neil Starr, their bespectacled frontman, is wasted in the Underworld, leaving only the guitarist’s dubious obsession with moonwalking into angular emo-poses as the only ingredient difficult to digest.
Headliners Anemic are a Bristol-based Californian quartet who offer infectious post-hardcore laced with extreme urgency and American punk twang. Now two albums wise and newly adorned in topical Goth-punk attire, they’re electric tonight, the poweral melodies and crisp vocals of ‘I Wish You Well’ and ‘Remember’ complimented cunningly with brothers Kevin and Daniel Peters’ mad gyrating and insistent gestures. Utterly hypnotic, frontman Kevin is equal-parts seductive and twisted, and vocals which threaten hard to pull-off live are reproduced flawlessly tonight with vicious emotion and added bite. Darker and more sinister than on the quietly intoxicating but starkly-produced recordings, Anemic out-do themselves live.

Now darker and more mature, but still as fresh and melody-driven as ever, Anemic make up in killer tunes all they lack in lyrical genius. Kevin Peter’s instantly recognisable vocals still display all the magic displayed in their debut album, New Souvenir, as he pours out tortured lines in a series of ferocious bursts and vulnerable gasps. While not to everyone’s taste these vocals certainly inject this divisive-but-comfortable studio production with the bite it deserves. Boasting fuzz-fuelled riffs, unobtrusive scratching and unexpected industrial outbursts, expect a fast-paced, passionate contribution from four Californians who’ve fulfilled their potential.

News 28/11/2004 What an album review in Metal Hammer for Left Side Brain: LEFT SIDE BRAIN ‘EQUAL AND OPPOSITE’ SUGAR SHACK RECORDS
‘More tasty Welsh screamo’
8/10 - METAL HAMMER
What is it with the Welsh and epic, tuneful emo? Whatever it is, we’re not complaining. This album builds skilfully on the foundations this four piece laid with their ‘Surface Tension’EP earlier this year. Now living in Bristol, Cymru boys G (guitars/vocals) and Ryan (drums) along with slightly newer Anglo members Oli (guitar/vocals) and Rich(bass/vocals) have turned in an assured and memorable debut which starts sounding like a contender for emo album of the year even after a few listens. Opener and EP track ‘Figures’ has the lush and intense feeling of ‘Troublegum’ era Therapy? but excellent production courtesy of Neal Calderwood (who coincidentally has worked with Andy Cairns too) boosts this to even more stratospheric levels. LSB’s signature sound is the judicious and sparing use of tight three part harmonies which, when unleashed, are full of plaintive yearning. Newer material like ’Clout’ employs guitar riffs that are more angular than a cupboard full of set squares. Strangely enough the band are at their weakest when they are sounding closest to Funeral For A Friend and Lostprophets wearing their hearts on their sleeves on tracks like ‘Fallout’( and they could do with losing the guitar solo). But to be honest, if this is the only criticism we can lay at the door(and it is), then this band could be the ones to burst through the cockpit door of the top twenty next year brandishing Stanley Knives. Mainly they are stamping down on the pedal and the more they do, the less they sound like their Pontypridd neighbours. ‘Uncomfortable’ comes on like The Wildhearts, Husker Du and Helmet all rammed into a blender and formed into a diabolically tasty but unhealthy rawk smoothie. And there’s a secret track which Led Zeps all the way to fuck and back. Superb. JOHN DORAN

The new Anemic album 'Till Death Do Us Part' has been mastered by Shawn Joseph who recently mastered Primal Scream and Rival Schools albums and it sounds like a beast!! News 4/11/2004 The second album review for Left Side brain and its even better: Left Side Brain - Equal and Opposite "ANGLO/WELSH ONES TO WATCH 4/5 You might have seen this band's video for the excellent Fallout on Scuzz recently. It had samples from the old protect and survive films at the beginning? One of them was wearing a really bad shirt? Anyhoo, that's irrelevant (although it was a bad shirt!), but if you caught the video you may well have found the song sticking in your head, I certainly did and I was glad when this arrived for me to review. All eleven songs by the Anglo/Welsh foursome sound instantly familiar without ever really ripping off anyone in particular. The storming intro 'Figures' is a beautifully structured smack in the face that forces you to listen, introducing you the tightly structured three vocal harmonies that haunt the rest of the record. The searing triple vocal attack backed by some ripping riffs, strike an almost perfect balance between vocals and the music. Just on the right side of commercial, these lads make some pretty darn good emotive anthems that will stick in your head for days. These are definitely ones to watch. - Adam Funnell" BIG CHEESE
News 3/11/2004 The first album review for Left Side Brain and what a corker: Left Side Brain Equal and Opposite ( Sugar Shack Records )
KKKK
'Anglo-Welsh Punks offer stinging full-length debut'
The Kind of band that gives you a bit of hope for the UK underground scene,Left Side Brain play a low slung and deliciously metallic brand of post-punk that sounds like Ash on a Soundgarden bender. For much of this debut, the Bristol based band get the combiation of accessibility and off kilter menace just about right. The likes of 'Clout','Uncomfortable'and 'Low Tide' jut with angled melodies, simple but refreshingly heavy riffs, and enough emotional cadences to keep the overload emo boat from sinking. A band who have set out with no greater intent than to make riotous noise with tunes attached, Left Side Brain can consider this mission accomplished. ROCK ON!! NEWS 9/9/2004 The first published review of The Maker ep: BEATS NOT BOMBS EP :: The Maker :: 07 September 2004 / Demo / 4-Trk CD By Cath Aubergine
"U Can Feel Love"? A terrible title I'm afraid lads, but listening to this I can, actually, so I'll let you off. Following an appearance on Glastonbury's New Bands stage, this is a single to put a big daft grin on the face of anyone who ever wore clothing that could have doubled as a tent... There's a stoned summer shuffle beat, a low-slung loose-fit bass, the first known use of the wah-wah in quite some time, a spirally bit of backwards sounding guitar and lyrics about general peace and happiness. Yes, tonight we're going to party like it's 1989.... The title track's a bit spikier musically with a dirty raw indie funk groove, a rather simplistic message but one we can't disagree with. And it's even got the Second Lady (after Rowetta, of course) of Dirty Indie Funk Denise Johnson on guest vocals. Has anyone seen my 22 inch Joes?
"Kill All Your Friends" (hang on, where did all the peace and love go?) is rockier and has a vague hint of grunge in the melody and lyrics if not the actual sound, which is still floating on a cloud somewhere between Madchester and Cosmic Scouseland. Then "Glide Into The Stars" adds yet more psychedelic haze to recall great lost Mancunian magpies World Of Twist or The Coral at their most interesting. I suspect these lads may have at least a passing acquaintance with soft drugs and monkey-dancing, and whilst I didn't think the baggy revival was pencilled in for a couple of years yet this is a confident, well-crafted debut to soundtrack the last days of the Indian summer.

NEWS 23/08/2004 The Maker ep 'Beats not Bombs' will be released on Oct 11th. The Left Side Brain album 'Equal and Opposite' will be released Nov 7th. Camille Miller's album is finished and will be scheduled for release in Jan 2005. Don't forget to catch Two Day Rule on tour starting Aug 31st with Allister and ALEXISONFIRE - check out www.twodayrule.com for up to date information. Loads of long overdue site updates very soon! NEWS 3/8/2004 Latest press on the fortcoming Two Day Rule album: Two Day Rule - Sampler Reviewed: 4th August 2004 This lil' CD is only five tracks from the forthcoming TDR album, and I thought I'd give it a cursory run-through before the real deal hopefully lands on my doormat soon. Coming off the wave created by the solid 'Been Around' EP it seems like the band are really putting their all into this release, as the production is bright without being over-polished, and boasts enough depth and crunch to deftly sit on the boundary between slick and raw.
'Monday' is the most striking track, and in my opinion one of the best things the band has ever done. It's a breathless race in a relentless double-time, elevated to almost classic status by Andrea's vocal range, at times a bile-filled sneer inches away from Patti Smith (if she was born in the 80s and brought up on Green Day) or sugaring proceedings with a full-bodied yelp that is sure to bring comparisons with Kelly No Comply that can only be complimentary. What makes 'Monday' so good is that it oozes energy and pace, the song flows coherently and like 'Phoning It In' it's both catchy and frantic enough to be extremely promising.
Listening to these five tracks you get the idea that TDR could actually be gigantic. Each song is liberally dosed with melody without making the overall effect overly saccharine, while retaining the effortless pop-punk sound that was hinted at on 'Been Around'. Dropping the ska influence from their music they seem to have settled into this surf-inflected sound easily, with 'All Your Fault' being hummably memorable after only an introductory listen such is the size of the hook while 'Had Enough' adds a buzzsaw guitar into the mix to sterling effect.
As a sampler it's promising, but my main problem is that the tracks on show here aren't especially varied or innovative, and unless the rest of the album has a few tricks up its sleeve I can't see TDR realising their considerable potential. All they need is something a bit off-key to spice up proceedings and they'll be sitting pretty on top of the heap.
We have just finalised the traxck listing for the fortcoming Left Side Brain album:
1) Figures 2) Clout 3) Fallout 4) Charge 5) Medicine Ball 6) Uncomfortable 7) Low Tide (I Comply) 8) Through 9) 6000 Miles 10) Silo Mentality 11) Firing Line The album title is still yet to be agreed.

Unfortunately, we have now had to pull out of all the remaining tour dates. There was simply no way of getting Ry fit and well enough in time to do them. We can only apologise once again to everyone who was hoping to come out to see us at one of the gigs. We will be looking to re-schedule as soon as possible.
We do, however, still intend to do everything possible to ensure we play at the Ashton Court Festival on Saturday. Aside from the fact that it is a huge gig for us, we will be filming for our next video so please come down and help to make it look extra awesome.

Problems with the Left Side Brain tour which started Monday - please see note from the band: After Tuesday and Wenesday's cancellations, Left Side Brain did not play in Carlisle last night and have now also had to pull out of the next three tour dates, those at York tomorrow, Nottingham on Saturday and Oxford on Sunday. It is now looking fairly likely that we may have to pull out of the tour entirely. We will send another mail out on Monday to give final confirmation of whether or not we can make the rest of the dates. Please check the messageboard at www.leftsidebrain.com for further information. We can only apologise again to anyone who was planning on coming out to see us at one of the gigs. We would play if it was at all possible and are gutted that the tour may end for us after only one date. LSB

News 14/4/2004 Septembre ep gets a 4/5 review in Logo this month:
We always suspected that Terry Abbott harboured a secret love for Silverchair, though his role as frontman of Vex Red limited the opportunities to express it. Now that he’s striking out alone there’s no such hindrance, and as this first taste of the results of the few weeks he spent holed up with Ross Robinson in LA illustrate, he has it in him to create music that’s far more adventurous and imaginative than either Vex Red or Silverchair, and all by keeping it simple. ‘I Am Weightless’, the lead track here, sounds exactly like Vex Red’s ‘Can’t Smile’ in the hands of Daniel Johns and Co., themselves perennially written off as late-at-the-party grunge-lite. It seems that Abbott’s starting his own party though, and the grunge is to the fore, together with a distinctly ‘classic’ strain of rock. It’s a combination that, surprisingly - amazingly - works brilliantly. Colour me surprised, but this raises expectations for Septembre’s forthcoming album to unsustainable levels. I bet the bastard meets those expectations as well. Welcome back. Cliff Roberts NEWS 8/4/2004 Septembre Rule3: Conceal Your Intentions (Sugar Shack)
This excellently autumnal prog meets extremo group are fronted by one Terry Abbot,ex of Vex Red. And what a maasive sound they make, like Oceansize or Amplifier taking on A Hundred Reasons or Funeral For A Friend. In fact given the absolute massivesqueness of the riffola it comes as no surprise to find out that Ross 'Halt! I am Mecha Godzilla!' Robinson's filthy finger prints are all over this really rather bloody excellent single. 8/10 John Doran METAL HAMMER
NEWS 6/4/2004 Septembre ep reviews are starting to arrive this week. Great comments in The Fly ...'their take on Silverchair's hypnotic dynamic is spot on.' PITCHBLEND REVIEW IN KERRANG THIS WEEK: PITCHBLEND 'WORDS PHRASED FROM NOTHING' (SUGARSHACK) More 'oomph' in general was rightfully anticipated from these Reading post-pubescents considering that they scooped K!'s Best Unsigned Band gong in 2000. Warm vocals and chiming guitars abound, but there's a discernibly nervy underbelly here that leaves them stuck in the uninspired loud-quiet-loud mire they claim to disown. Mark Greenway KK KERRANG

News 3/3/2003 Redefine have parted company with vocalist Pete Daplyn, the guys are in the studio this week working on the new album but will be auditioning for a new singer. There is a message from Pete copied below which is taken from the Redefine website www.redefine-online.com Sugar Shack Records and Management wish Pete all the best. MESSAGE........ Just thought I'd post a note in person to say goodbye properly-
Firstly, THANKYOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH to everyone who's given me so much support over the past year or two, all of you who came up and said hey after shows or bought cd's with my crazy voice on them; and obviously most of all to Ben, Steve and Paul for being the best band ever to rock my world.
Unfortunately after 4 1/2 years of incredible experiences in the band, I've found that I am simply no longer able to keep going as singer because of reasons honestly out of my control. Sometimes your life gets in the way of your dreams and you find that you just can't push it aside anymore.
It's pretty sad but HAD to happen if Redefine's gonna finally achieve supreme world domination, so look on the bright side! I'm sure that whoever takes over the mic will be able to ensure this happens and I know you guys will keep the faith anyhow!
Take care all of you- you've made me very happy, and allowed me to achieve things I never thought would be possible for a guy like me!
See ya when the boys make it to Wembley!
All my love, best wishes and deepest thanks,

We have 29 songs for the next album and as you can imagine we can't agree although Everything, Feed My Eyes, Leave me Alone, C'Mon, Easy and Get Some Rest have already been recorded.

News 9/9/2002 - First Grebo album review - release date planned October 21st
GREBO DON'T JUST DO SOMETHING, STAND THERE (Sugar Shack) BEHOLD your future executioners, the new teenage brit-punk revolution/revelation is upon us:seems if you stick around long enough there's always gonna be one along. Bristol's Grebo have been together for about two years, have already released an album's worth of material on three EPs that highlight the self deprecating talent of songwriter Ben, a prodigious and prolific talent as well as playing anywhere that will let them set up. Not unlike the almost-psychotic positively of The Ataris - who they supported last year - it's sad comment on the times that they have seen to deliver everything in a faux TransAtlantic accent, perhaps reasoning that if they sound American then maybe people will think they're American.Still, it's not worth nit picking with anyone who can turn out songs as good as 'Sleep' and the fantastic, emotional 'Never Alone'. TWO DAY RULE single........ END OF SUMMER
Momentarily departing from the formula that made them ones to watch, the exuberant punk-pop experience that is Two Day Rule have opted to let Andrea's competant vocals go it alone as they bid farewell to the summer fun. Mature, thoughtful and, to B-side 'Johnny & Loretta', wonderfully classy. 4/5
REDEFINE single ....... JENNIFER CRIED
Continuing to ascend the ladder of freshfaced rock acclaim, Bristol's Redefine offer a heady emotional glimpse into the flipside of 'Cypher' and 'Seven by Seven'. Displaying a strengh and depth that should have been let loose long ago, maniacal riffs meet with lyrical insight to ensure another triumph for the new kids on the alternative block. 4/5
Cléan are in the studio this week and the new single looks to be ' Naked Girls ' release date Nov 19th
News 9/8/2002 Two Day Rule played in Stourbridge on Wednesday, they are in High Wycombe tonight and Oxford on Saturday. Please check local press for details.Their tour continues in Bristol on the 15th at the Old Fire Station, Rugeley on the 16th , Cardiff the 21st and Sheffield on the 22nd. The last two dates are with Jakka The Cat who are coming over from the States. The band apoligise to anyone who was planning to attend the Barfly gig in London on the 20th but the lineup was changed last week. Don't forget their new single 'End Of Summer' is in the shops on the 19th August.
Cléan are in the studio week commencing 19th August to record four new tracks which hopefully will be their next release.
I popped in the studio yesterday to check out the current situation with the Madnomad album. The results were amazing especially a track that I haven't heard before which Rupert from Chikinki sings lead vocals on.
Hopefully you saw the feature in Kerrang yesterday on Redefine , the new single Jennifer Cried is out September 2nd and includes the banned video filmed by Dan Ackroyd.
We're nearly there with the artwork for the Moqsha and Grebo albums. |
