Redefine

As far as debut singles go this is awesome. Any preconception held that Redefine were hiding behind Brian Moloko's make-up to kick-start their career then think again.

From the opening Seven By Seven with its venomous
assault of buzz saw guitar and blood curdling scream to the inherent frustrations embedded deep within Daisy Chain suggest Redefine have clearly set out their stall from the offset.

Redefine
With obvious reference points being nu-metal spiraling into an occasional, lighter melodic territory, Redefine are a far more complex beast once the listener delves deep enough; something of which Pete (vocals) and Ben (guitars) vehemently demonstrate during a cold winter evening in the heart of Bristol due to their reluctance at the prospect of being labeled as simply a 'metal' band.

"Neil Finn is one of the greatest songwriters ever," shouts Pete causing a momentary spell of silence in one of Bristol's more fashionable venues that we find ourselves seated in. "He (Finn) is able to pluck a melody out of thin air. Even his lyrics were never direct, they were never straight love songs. If I was given a tape with the song Private Universe, I wouldn't know where to begin!"

Such a protestation is definitely refreshing considering the genre of music that Redefine are likely to find themselves pigeon-holed in. Citing the former Crowded House frontman as a major influence when every other metal band in town would rather suggest that they grew up on a steady diet of Black Sabbath and Metallica, is not only very brave but also encouraging. Such words, though, have more than a ring of truth about them because I am witnessing a band who are clearly ahead of their time.

In fact, Pete, psychologically, resembles a man in the latter half of his twenties rather than the tender age of eighteen that his true identity reveals. This is greatly due to his childhood memories comprising of various locations around the world - some exotic others not so exotic - as he was moved from pillar to post due to his father's occupational demands.
