Shack Records Presents -
Greatest Hits VOL 1
Sugar Shack Records Presents Greatest Hits Volume One
Funny things hobbies, the way they can go from a harmless
week-end dallying in the garden shed to critically applauded,
global business concern in the space of 18 months. Mike
Darby, head of Bristol based Sugar Shack Records could
tell you a thing or two about when pastimes go mental.
The self confessed "punk turned suit" started the label
in 1999 because A: "...I was never very good at playing
an instrument back in the punk day, even by the standards
of punk musicianship so I had to knock that idea on
the head. " B? "I just love music, I've never stopped
going to gigs even though I got a 'respectable' job.
I was just amazed at all the talent in Bristol that
was being overlooked because they weren't Trip-Hop or
whatever.
I've always believed in that punk ethic, here's three
chords, just do it yourself if nobody else will. But
also I'm a business man at the end of the day and I
couldn't let talent like that go unrecorded and unreleased.
I liked what people like Postcard in Scotland did in
the 80's, I thought it was time we had a label for the
sound of young Bristol, it didn't exactly turn out like
that though, because now we've got bands from Switzerland,
Australia, Sheffield...but, you know what I mean" And
C? "I'm just stupid, I guess." Just doing it has paid
dividends. With a healthy roster of acts and a stack
of fine press and Singles Of The Week from the inkies
and rock mags, Sugarshack records has gone from being
Mike's hobby to a limited company with global ambitions
for the Bristol and beyond acts it signs. What you are
about to feed to your CD is truly a platter fit for
a King. An extraordinarily eclectic and eclectically
extraordinary selection of tracks representing Sugar
Shack's bulging (and still growing) roster of acts.
From the teeth gritting angst of future metal pups Redefine
to the slick sassy, and for alliteration's sake, sexy
sound of avant pop-dubsters Moqsha; the perfectly crafted
snook cocking of Steve Bush to the psyche-folk chow
down of swish Swiss hipsters Cléan; the floor filling
jump-up punker antics of Two Day Rule to the break out
the kitchen knives sigh of the unbelievably underrated
Rita Lynch; the elaborate epic scale pop of romo-rompers
Action Spectacular and the heart torn lyricism of Oz
mood setters Bluebottle Kiss. And then there's Madnomad
- Bristol's best kept sonic secret/weapon soon to go
stella but right now tantalizingly tight lipped with
this just over a minute introductory slice of mayhem.
Hey, we know this is a press release but believe us
when we say that, come the release of their album they're
going to fuck with your head. And not always in a nice
way neither. Just thought we'd warn you.
